Aphrodite emerged from the sea foam (aphros) that gathered around the severed genitals of Uranus thrown into the sea by his son Cronus — born from the primal act of divine castration, beauty emerging from violence and the primordial generative force. She was the goddess of erotic love, beauty, pleasure, and procreation — and one of the most troublesome to Zeus because her power operated outside the structure of Olympian order.
