Who is Demeter?

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest, grain, and the fertile earth — the mother whose love for her daughter Persephone is so absolute that when Persephone is abducted to the underworld, Demeter's grief literally stops the growth of all plants and threatens to starve the world. It is the single most important myth in the agricultural Mediterranean world: the explanation of seasons, yes, but more profoundly the myth of a mother's love so fierce it bends cosmic law. Demeter ultimately had to accept what could not be accepted — that her daughter would spend a portion of each year in the underworld — and in this acceptance, she created the cycle of seasons, the principle that loss and return, winter and spring, are woven into the fabric of life itself. Her Mysteries at Eleusis were the most important religious rites in the ancient Greek world, promising initiates an understanding of death and rebirth that transcended ordinary mortal terror.
